Known as the Civic Arena until December 1999, the Mellon Arena was built to be the home of the Civic Light Opera in 1961. However, the Pittsburgh Penguins soon became tenants in the fall of 1967 and won two Stanley Cup Championships while playing at the arena during Mario Lemieux’s successful career. Comically, this white dome became affectionately known as “The Igloo” and held a special place in the hearts of Penguins’ fans. In 2012 the arena was demolished and the Consol Energy Center took its place. In its time as an active venue, the Mellon Arena was lucky enough to host the Civic Light Opera, Elvis, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Even though it is no longer part of the Pittsburgh skyline, it will live on in the hearts of Pittsburghers and visitors for generations to come.
Penguins hockey fans and all Pittsburghers will love this commemorative ornament of Mellon Arena, which is sure to be a treasured keepsake for generations to come.
